How to Make Ranger Beads (DIY Guide)
Ranger beads—also called pace count beads—are a simple, proven navigation tool used by military, search and rescue, hunters, hikers, and backpackers. They allow you to track distance traveled on foot without relying on batteries, GPS, or cell service.
In this guide, we’ll walk through exactly how to make your own ranger beads, why they work, and how our DIY Ranger Bead Kits make the process fast and foolproof using 100% US-made materials.
What Are Ranger Beads?
Ranger beads are a manual distance-tracking system based on your pace count. Each bead represents a set distance—typically 100 meters or a fixed number of steps—allowing you to track how far you’ve traveled over land.
They’re commonly used for:
-
Land navigation
-
Hunting and scouting
-
Hiking and backpacking
-
Orienteering
-
Emergency preparedness
No electronics. No failure points. Just muscle memory and repetition.
What You Need to Make Ranger Beads
You can source everything yourself, but our DIY Ranger Bead Kits include all required components, pre-measured and ready to assemble.
Our DIY Kit Includes:
-
Pre-cut length of paracord (no measuring, no waste)
-
13 durable beads
-
9 lower beads (distance increments)
-
4 upper beads (full distance cycles)
-
-
100% US-made materials
-
Sized for consistent spacing and reliable use
You’ll only need:
-
Scissors
-
A lighter (to seal the paracord ends)
Step-by-Step: How to Make Ranger Beads
Step 1: Understand the Bead Layout
A standard ranger bead setup uses:
-
9 beads on the lower section (each bead = one distance unit)
-
4 beads on the upper section (each bead = a completed cycle of 9)
This allows you to track long distances without losing count.
Step 2: Thread the Lower Beads
-
Take one end of the paracord. Gently pull out the inner strands. Save one for the next step
-
Slide all 13 beads onto the gutted cord. The easiest way to do this is to fold the gutted cord in half. Tie a double overhand knot using one of the inner strands half way through. This will make threading much easier
-
Slide all the beads down, leaving about 4 inches from the bottom to give yourself a working end that is easier to manage.
These beads will slide down one at a time as you move.
Step 3: Create the Divider Knot
Tie an overhand knot at the original halfway point creating a 1.5" to 2" loop
Step 4: Thread the Upper Beads
-
Slide 4 beads onto the cord above the divider knot.
-
Tie an overhand knot about about 5" from the top. This should separate the beads leaving 4 up top and 9 at the bottom.
Each upper bead represents a full cycle (typically 1km) of the lower beads (each lower bead equal to 100m)
Step 5: Secure and Finish
-
Slide the 9 lower beads up to the existing knot. Tie a final knot at the bottom. This section should be at about the 10" mark.
-
Trim excess paracord if needed.
-
Carefully melt the cut ends with a lighter to prevent fraying. Pro tip, use a pair of pliers to combine the two melted ends and it will never fray or split.
Your ranger beads are now complete.
How to Use Ranger Beads
-
Determine your pace count over a known distance (typically 1km for the top beads and 100m for the lower beads).
-
Every time you complete that distance, slide one lower bead down.
-
After all 9 lower beads are used, reset them and slide one upper bead.
-
Repeat as needed.
This system allows you to track distance accurately, even in poor visibility or off-trail terrain.
