What are ranger beads?

Ranger beads — also called pace count beads — are a simple land navigation tool: two groups of beads on a cord that you slide to track the distance you travel on foot. No batteries, no signal, no apps — just a reliable way to know how far you've gone, whether your electronics fail or you prefer navigating with map and compass.

How do I use them?

First, find your pace count (the number of paces you take per 100 meters). Then every time you walk 100 meters, slide one of the 9 lower beads down. Once all 9 are down (900 meters), slide them back up and move one of the 4 upper beads down for 1,000 meters. One set tracks up to 4,900 meters. What are they made of?

Every set is hand-assembled in College Grove, Tennessee, from US-sourced materials — including genuine USA-made 550 paracord. Choose your rope color (Black, Tan, OD Green, or USA) and your top and bottom bead colors (Black, White, Orange, Tan, or OD Green).

How do I find my pace count?

Walk a measured 100 meters, counting every time your left foot hits the ground (one pace = two steps). Repeat three times and take the average. Full instructions: How to Calibrate Your Pace Count.

How fast will my order ship?

Every set is assembled to order, so most orders ship within 1–2 business days from College Grove, Tennessee.

How much does shipping cost?

The DIY Ranger Bead Kit builds 10 complete sets for $50 — about $5 per set — and makes a great hands-on land navigation activity for troops, units, and training groups. For larger orders, contact us and we'll work something out.
